The master’s program offers evening and Saturday class meetings. On this schedule, students can complete three courses (9 credits) per term if they wish.

  • 12 courses, 36 credit hours, including capstone course
  • Complete the master’s degree in as little as 16 months
  • Blended delivery combines classroom instruction with online delivery via Blackboard, GW’s web-based educational platform
  • Students attend classes one night per week plus one Saturday per month
  • Master’s students must complete all core coursework and specialize in one area of focus: Fundamentals of Strategic Security or Strategic Cybersecurity Enforcement
  • If desired, master’s students can request to be awarded one graduate certificate in their area of focus in addition to the awarding of the master’s degree.

Choose your area of focus from
Fundamentals of Strategic Security or
Strategic Cybersecurity Enforcement.

The College of Professional Studies offers a Master of Professional Studies degree in Security and Safety Leadership (SSL) developed in conjunction with the Center for Excellence in Public Leadership. This program is designed to meet the professional development needs of individuals who are involved in the public or private safety sectors in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, and have experience in law enforcement, emergency management, corporate security, transportation security, fire service, public safety, public health preparedness, or the military.

The Master of Professional Studies in Security and Safety Leadership delivered in Arlington, VA includes two areas of focus: 1) Fundamentals of Strategic Security and 2) Strategic Cybersecurity Enforcement. Students must choose an area of focus at the time of application. All students enrolled in the master's program will complete the core coursework which focuses on strategic leadership in addition to coursework for their area of focus and capstone.

The main objective of the Security and Safety Leadership program is to contribute to the professional development of safety professionals working in the DC-Metro area by analyzing a wide range of homeland security issues, policies, and practices. Students in this degree program will develop competencies and knowledge relating to:

  • Homeland Security strategy and policy development
  • Regional security issues
  • Emergency response
  • Inter-agency cooperation
  • Leadership and performance management
  • Managing organizational change
  • Intelligence and strategic analysis
  • Cyber security enforcement (Arlington, VA only)

This program is appropriate for professionals wishing to pursue a "Homeland Security" master's degree.
