Admissions Information

To be admitted to the program, degree candidates must meet the admissions criteria established by the University, the School and the program. Applicants who are citizens of countries where English is not an official language are also required to submit either TOEFL or IELTS scores. Applicants must submit content area analysis form with other application materials. Full-time programs begin either spring or summer; part-time program begins fall, spring, and summer.

GSEHD and the Master's of Secondary Education program require the following general application materials:

  • Two letters of recommendation (one should be from a faculty member and the other from a professional supervisor) .
  • One official transcript from each institution attended, whether or not a degree was conferred. An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning is required for admission to all graduate programs.
  • Two copies of your resume.
  • Two copies of your Statement of Purpose (250-500 words).
  • Graduate Record Examination or Miller Analogies Test scores.
  • A signed copy of the GSEHD Statement of Understanding.
  • Copies of any teaching certificates you hold.
  • Content Area Preparation Form

Content area advisors carefully admit and advise students based on state/local expectations regarding both content area and professional coursework and experiences. Students must take any missing subject area coursework for each area in which they are to be licensed to teach.


Application Information

Apply via the web - an Electronic Graduate Admissions Application is available online at www.gwu.edu/gradinfo. This complete online process allows you to submit your graduate application and electronically send requests for letters of recommendation. Transfer Credit

With the advisor's approval, up to (six) hours of course work may be accepted in transfer and credited toward a master's degree. Such course work must have been taken within the past five years, be related to the subject matter, have not been applied toward another degree, and have been successfully completed with a grade of B or better.

All GW Near You registrations are conducted via GWeb. This system will enroll you in classes and automatically generate your schedule and bill.
