PSLX 210 American Jurisprudence
An introductory course in the foundations, theories, history, and applications of the American legal system. No previous legal education or training is necessary. Students must have good study and analytical skills. The course will involve study of local, state, and federal courts and sources of law. The American Jurisprudence course also contains a survey of Ethics and Professionalism issues of especial importance to paralegals: the unauthorized practice of law, attorney-client privilege, and competence.

PSLX 211 Legal Research and Writing
The Legal Research portion of this course introduces students to traditional print and online legal research tools, the various methodologies, and the rules that apply to legal research. Students identify, locate, and use local, state, federal, and international law sources; statutes; regulations; rules; constitutions; secondary and tertiary sources. Students will conduct research in the library and complete research assignments using the library's resources as well as the online research tools LexisNexis and Westlaw.

In the Legal Writing portion of the course, students will draft, edit, and prepare for presentation various legal documents based upon their research, including memorandums, motions, and briefs.

PSLX 213 Corporations and Contracts Law
Corporate Law

This course comprises two parts: Corporate Law and Contracts Law. Together they teach the processes of corporate law practice and address underlying theoretical underpinnings to the extent that such context enables the corporate paralegal to be an effective, contributing member of a corporate practice. This course serves as the foundation to the Legal Concentrations, all of which have corporate or contractual elements.

This course covers an area of primary importance to Washington, DC. legal professionals: the law of government contracts. Students will study the law regarding procurement, formation, and execution of government contracts.
