Admission Information
For persons who wish to apply for a Master's, Education Specialist, or Doctoral Degree Program, or Graduate Certificate Program, the following information will be helpful in completing the application packet and in preparing the required materials. For complete details, please refer to the application packet, which may be accessed Online at www.gwu.edu/gradinfo. Please call (202) 973-1130, (757) 269-4949, or (804) 649-1333 with any questions. Students who wish to take a course without entering a degree/certificate program may enroll for courses by following registration procedures in the "How to Register" section of the webiste unless otherwise restricted in the program description.
 Admission Decisions
Applications are normally evaluated as soon as they are received. However, a few programs process completed applications only after the admission deadlines. Processing an application usually takes four to six weeks. Late applications will be considered if space is available.
 Admission Offers
An offer of admission is valid for the semester stated in the admission letter. If you wish to postpone matriculation, you must notify the appropriate admissions office in writing. Policies regarding deferment of attendance vary by school.
 Admission Requirements
The following materials are required for applicants to most GW programs. Since some schools or programs request additional materials, please refer to the directions in the online application packet for a complete list of specific requirements for your program.
The following should be submitted electronically:
- Completed application with electronic signature.
Be sure to indicate the field of study and any concentration for which you are applying.
- Nonrefundable application fee of $60.
If you are a GW graduate or a currently registered degree candidate in a different program, no application fee is required.
- Statement of purpose.
In an essay of 250-500 words for master's/education specialist applicants or 750-1000 words for doctoral applicants, state your purpose in undertaking graduate study at The George Washington University.
- Letters of recommendation.
One may be from a faculty member; the other, from a professional supervisor.
- GRE test scores (if required by your program)
GRE scores may be submitted electronically; select The George Washington University, code 5246.
The following shouldbe submitted via US mail to the appropriate admissions office:
- Official or certified copies of academic records
These are required from all colleges and universities previously attended, including The George Washington University, whether or not you completed a program. Transcripts must be forwarded in their original, sealed envelopes. If academic records are in a language other than English, a certified English translation must be provided. Translations alone will not be accepted.
- Standardized test scores (if required by your program)
Scores from standardized tests other than GRE which should be submitted electronically (e.g., GMAT, MAT, etc.) may be required for some programs. Specific test requirements are summarized below. Scores should be sent by the testing agency directly to your graduate admissions office; specific information about how this is done can be found in the online application packet.
 Application Procedures
Applications will not be reviewed until all required materials have been submitted electronically and all official or certified copies of academic records have been submitted to the appropriate admissions office. Hampton Roads area applicants should submit official transcripts and test scores, if applicable, to the:

All applications and supporting documents become the property of The George Washington University and cannot be returned. Original materials must be submitted; facsimile copies will not be accepted. The George Washington University considers applicant information records to be confidential.
