Admissions and Registration

Admissions Requirements

In order to qualify for the MA degree program, students must be admitted to the Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD). Applicants must have the following:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Two letters of recommendation, one from a professional supervisor
  • Acceptable scores on either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT)
  • Interview with the program advisor
  • Three years prior teaching and/or administrative experience by program completion

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing is granted for approved courses taken at other accredited institutions, but 24 credit hours must be completed in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development.

Transfer of Credit

With advisor approval, 9 credit hours of coursework may be accepted as transfer credit, including courses taken at GW as a non-degree student. Up to 9 credit hours may be taken during the semester prior to admission. After that, students must be admitted to continue taking courses. Such coursework must normally have been completed within the past five years and must not have been applied toward another degree. A minimum grade of B must have been earned in each course.


Application Procedure

Applicants to the GSEHD are required to submit the following online:

  • Completed online graduate application form with non-refundable application fee
  • Official GRE or MAT scores (not more than 5 years prior to application)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Statement of Purpose (250-500 words)
  • Current resume

The following elements must by mailed to the Hampton Roads Center at 1 Old Oyster Point Road, Suite 200, Newport News, VA 23602:

  • Official transcripts from each college or university attended
  • Copies of all Teaching Certificates
  • Signed Statement of Purporse
  • Hard copy of completed and signed online application and attachments

Testing

The MAT is scheduled monthly at the Hampton Roads Center. The test fee must be paid at the time of registration to reserve a seat. Call 757-269-4949 or 804-649-1333 for more information.
