Program Format
The Doctor of Education Program is offered in a cohort, off-campus format in which students begin and complete course work as a group, benefiting from the collegial support and experiences of other class members. Hampton Roads cohorts meet on selected weekends.

The Research Method Sequence is customized to both the level of knowledge of the student and the doctoral research topic chosen for exploration by the student. Upon entering pre-candidacy each student takes a self-assessment of research skills at www.gwu.edu/~assess1. Based on assessment results, the student proceeds to various levels of quantitative and qualitative research courses. As the dissertation topic is established, the student chooses one or more courses which will strengthen the knowledge needed to pursue dissertation research. All students will take a minimum of nine hours in research methods.
 Degree Requirements
Candidates must have three years of successful teaching experience upon completion of the program. Students must complete 36 academic credits and 12 research credits (minimum) of graduate work. A grade-point average of 3.0 is required for graduation. Student who receive a grade of C in more than 6 credit hours are subject to suspension. Students who receive a grade of F must confer with the dean before enrollment for further course work is allowed.
