"As a graduate of the school counseling program at GW, I've had the wonderful opportunity to serve students at all levels. I feel well prepared to do so because of the unique experiences and overall confidence I gained in my classes, in the counseling laboratory, and in my practicum and internship. I have advanced in my career field, due to the exceptional knowledge that I gained at GW. The School Counseling program challenged me to be an exemplary leader and an outstanding professional." The George Washington University Master of Arts in Education and Human Development in the field of School Counseling enables participants to meet the growing needs of K-12 students by providing instruction in effective interventions to support sound psychological and behavioral development. Academic and social pressures of childhood and adolescence can compel students to seek experienced, caring, professional guidance in the safety of their school environment.
The School Counseling program is dedicated to the preparation of students to become knowledgeable and ethical counseling professionals for employment as school counselors in public and private schools and related educational settings for diverse populations. We endorse an integrated approach to school counseling with other school services. Our program contributes to human development, adjustment and change by encouraging our diverse faculty and student body to engage in reflective practice, innovative inquiry and responsible social action.
The program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), which is the nationally recognized agency for the accreditation of graduate programs in counseling. The program is also accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Please visit the Freshman Transition Initiative (FTI) web site to read about the initiative, developed by Dr. Rebecca Dedmond, Program Director, that is being adopted by schools all over the country.
The new Post-Master's Graduate Certificate in Counseling is a 12-credit, four-course program which builds on the strong foundation of the master's degree, engaging students in coursework that enhances their role as counselors and provides additional professional development.
