 Degree Requirements
The course of studies includes classroom, laboratory and field site education and training. The program includes a two-semester internship in a K-12 school. Interns deliver counseling services under supervision both in the program's Community Counseling Services Center, a fully equipped training facility, and at schools in the community.
COMMUNITY COUNSELING SERVICES CENTER
The Community Counseling Services Center (CCSC) at the Alexandria Graduate Education Center is an associate facility of the Community Counseling Services Center at The George Washington University main campus. The CCSC is the clinical adjunct to classroom teaching; a necessary component in the professional preparation of school counselors. The CCSC offers students the opportunity for experiential learning and supervision with videotaping of counseling sessions. Appropriate testing materials are available for use by students with community clients and in the classroom.
The purpose of the supervised counseling experience in the Community Counseling Services Center is to provide students with direct faculty supervision. Sessions are videotaped, with the consent of the client, and are used for direct faculty-student supervision. The objectives of the CCSC are:
- To give confidential counseling services to children and families in the community at a moderate cost
- To provide an opportunity for students to practice their counseling skills under the close supervision of faculty, licensed supervisors, and peers
- To provide faculty with opportunities to observe counselors-in-training, in order to provide them with feedback, monitor their progress, and substantiate their mastery of counseling skills
